DIANNE BUTLER OUT OF THE BOX
IDON’T think I’ve ever seen Hermione Norris in a dress. Normally she’s cast in things that require her to wear jeans and boots and a jacket with a lot of pockets — an outfit that can accommodate weapons.
But when she arrives at Peter Kingdom’s chambers tonight she’s wearing a very cute ’ 50s kind of dress and it’s quite the shock. It’s not there for no reason though.
The full skirt tells us this: She’s mad. That, and the fact she’s just left a restful facility.
Checked herself out, in fact, after sleeping with her doctor.
Or he slept with her, is the other way to look at it, Beatrice points out to her brother.
Her brother is Peter, and his chambers are also his home. He lives there and Beatrice thinks she might too.
Peter’s less enthusiastic about her plan, if only because there’s just the one bed, not counting the basket where the dog sleeps.
Clearly though, Beatrice is strong-willed and Peter is pliable.
Their brother, Simon, we learn at the start of the show, is dead and, as the episode goes on, it emerges there are some unanswered questions about how he died.
I have a feeling, based only on the amount of television
Kingdom’s come: Stephen Fry I’ve seen in my life, this might be an ongoing mystery.
Just checking with you — the brother has been dead six months, would you expect his mobile phone to still work?
Anyway, also in the mix here is Peter’s work as a country solicitor in the East Anglian town of Market Shipborough. You’ve seen Doc Martin, right? Kingdom is the same, only the lead character is nicer— and not a doctor.
The drawcard here, I probably don’t need to spell it out for you, is Stephen Fry.
I’ve never watched this show before, even though it’s been on a couple of other channels, and maybe you haven’t either.
But Saturday night on the ABC, it’s just about the perfect time and channel and night. Kingdom ABC1, 7.30pm
