SHOULD Channel 10 have persisted with Australian Idol? That is the question some pundits have been asking after monster ratings for Australia’s Got Talent and Seven’s decision to commission a second series of The X Factor. Idol lasted seven seasons and Ian Dickson says Ten made the right decision to end the show. ‘‘(Ten program director) David Mott asked me about it. He said ‘Are we doing the right thing?’ and I said ‘Yes’,’’ Dickson says. ‘‘It would have been terrible to see Idol, which I loved and the country loved, die the death of a thousand cuts. ‘‘Far better to give it a swift chop to the neck and can it. The first two years were brilliant. You’re never going to repeat that magic (with later seasons). ‘‘If I’m honest, it probably went for two seasons too many.’’
