★★★ At 270g, the Legria HFR106 is at the light end of the fully featured digital

video camera spectrum. It shoots video in high definition, offers a 20x

optical and 400x digital zoom and records straight on to an SD memory card. It has Mini HDMI, component, AV and USB connections and comes with all cables except the Mini HDMI. While the Sony model (left) is intuitive to

use, the Canon takes some perseverance that is ultimately worth

while. It has face-detection technology, shake-reduction and what Canon calls ‘‘intelligent auto’’ so that the camera recognises the best settings to use depending on the environment. It has Dolby Digital stereo sound and a 1.73-megapixel

still functionality.
