86. Long live The Simpsons!’’

On October 7, Fox announced The Simpsons would be renewed for a record 24th and 25th seasons. The actors will get about $300,000 an episode.

The deal takes the series — already the longest-running prime-time comedy in TV history — through to a total of 559 episodes.

Cartwright knows it could have been very different. The 54-year-old auditioned to voice the part of Lisa Simpson.

‘‘ I had mostly done boy voices. I saw a picture of Lisa in the reception area (before meeting creator Matt Groening) and nothing really indicated to me a sound. But next to her was the picture of Bart — a 10-year-old school-hating underachiever. ‘‘ I said to Matt, ‘ Do you mind if I do Bart, instead of Lisa?’ and he said, ‘ No, that’s fine’. I started speaking like Bart (and Groening said), ‘ Oh my God. That’s him. That’s Bart’. He hired me on the spot.’’ The Simpsons, Eleven, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday, Tuesday, 7.30pm
