Herald Sun - Switched On - - Monday -

OOH, this couldn’t be more exciting – Simon Baker’s directing tonight’s episode of The Mentalist. I mean, he’s got the glasses for it, he’s more than ready. Besides, he’s done it before, an episode last year and an episode of The Guardian, that show he was in before he really hit the big time and started refusing to talk about E Street. I wonder if Simon’s is like every other workplace, though, and people are just expected to do several other jobs as well as their own. Maybe he doesn’t actually want to direct and they’re just making him. He’s on massive money, you know how it goes. People start thinking they own you.

Love the others and everything, but who’d watch this show if there was no Simon Baker? (Has anyone ever entertained the idea that Grace Van Pelt is going to be somehow connected to Red John? A victim, perhaps? I only ask because of her red hair.)

So tonight. A high-credibility guest star in the form of David Paymer plays a kind of older version of Patrick Jane, and it’s fairly disturbing to Jane to see how your life can just disappear pursuing a serial killer you may never catch. James Panzer (Paymer) is a blogger who is as obsessive about his guy as Jane is about Red John (bearing in mind the world thinks Red John is dead), only he’s been at it a lot longer.

Have a look at the main suspect, Richard Haibach. In real life the actor is William Mapother. Tom Cruise’s cousin. He’s as creepy as anything. Richard Haibach, I mean, not Tom Cruise. Obviously.

I’ll be keen to see where Simon Baker’s career goes. He’s been in two great movies – LA Confidential and The Killer Inside Me, which is on Foxtel/austar this month and cannot be missed. The Mentalist Channel 9, 8.30pm

Directing: Simon Baker
