MERLIN

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Front Page -

Channel 10, Sunday, 6.30pm ★★★★ Merlin was treated with suspicion when it premiered in 2008. Few gave it a chance of success because it seemed a blatant attempt to cash in on the Harry Potter craze, but it has proved the critics wrong. One of the great strengths of Merlin is that it’s a UK production. The writing’s solid and the actors have been cast primarily because they can act. Colin Morgan, who plays Merlin, couldn’t have put it better when he revealed in an interview that ‘‘the Americans are planning another retelling of the Camelot legend . . . so I suppose we will discover just how badly it can be done’’. How right he was. The recent Camelot series was a dud. DD
