MAL­COLM is Dr Karl’s son. I find this hard to rec­on­cile, un­til I see Dr Karl. He’s ob­vi­ously been try­ing some act­ing since I last saw him. He’s stooped and ad­dled and I re­ally hope he’s not cur­rently work­ing as a gen­eral prac­ti­tioner. Maybe now that he’s seen all the ladies of Erins­bor­ough naked the at- trac­tion’s worn off medicine any­way. Gary the real es­tate agent has found him what he de­scribes as the ‘‘ per­fect pad to suit his life­style’’ as a pro­fes­sional sin­gle man, but Karl isn’t be­hav­ing like any of those things. Su­san seems obliv­i­ous to his over-act­ing, and car­ries on eat­ing the enor­mous break­fast he’s made.

They don’t eat at all be­fore leav­ing the house over at Paul Robin­son’s, and they ap­pear bet­ter for it. He made pan­cakes, be­cause So­phie’s de­pressed about Noah and Kate and every­thing and Paul’s try­ing to be a reg­u­lar guy.
