RADIO funnymen Merrick and Rosso ruled the airwaves for more than a decade, first on Triple J and later on Nova. But despite numerous TV series, including Merrick and Rosso Unplanned and The B-team, the duo did not hit the same heights on the small screen. Since 2009 Tim Ross has been working as a solo performer and has completed his first series hosting travel show No Leave No Life, where he whisks workaholics away on surprise holidays. Whydid you decide to accept the offer to host the show? I think most people given the opportunity to do a travel show would say yes. I liked the idea of encouraging Australians to travel around our own backyard, and the feel good factor. There isn’t as much comedy as you might expect for a man of your talents. It’s about these guys going away and not me doing a travelogue. I don’t mind that some of the episodes are a little straighter than people might expect. I quite liked some of the quite raw and honest momentswe got talking to these people. Of the people you surprised, were any particularly inspiring? There was a guy called Ron who hadn’t had a holiday in 10 years — his work situation didn’t allow him. And he embraced every moment of it. Did any of the Monday morning ‘‘surprises’’ not go as planned? Ron was a real estate agent and our executive producer pretended to be looking at a house she wanted to buy. And he was devastated because he thought he was going to get a sale! That was the only disaster; he was so red hot thinking he was going to sell it. Who was your favourite celebrity guest? Dawn Fraser was pretty cool. Jon Stevens was great. But Tim Freedman was hilarious. We flew back from WA together, which was unreal fun. Whydo you think Merrick and Rosso never had the same success on TV as on radio? It’s hard to do both at the same time because you’re a slave to two masters. If we’d have done television exclusively, by the nature of us having more time and finessing it, it probably would have been a much better product. But I don’t regret it. When they hit they were really good. So is the partnership completely defunct? After 15 years we’re pretty much done, we had a good run. No Leave No Life Channel 7, Saturday 6.30pm
