Canon, from $519 ★★★ Despite only having a 26x zoom, this camera is a quality offering. The HFR26 has a noticeably robust build for a 270g digital video camera. The high- definition unit has twin flash memory slots for SD cards and it has 8GB of internal memory. It uses Canon’s full HD CMOS sensor and shoots 1920 X 1080 video. The 3-inch touchscreen LCD viewer and auto lens cover means that you can be videoing in seconds. You can use auto, face priority and face detection and touch and track to keep focus perfectly. With five recording modes, you can shoot three hours of footage at the lowest quality or 40 minutes at 24 megabits a second on an 8GB memory card. Controls are well positioned and with practice you can record with one hand. It has USB 2.0, Mini HDMI, AV and component out slots, but doesn’t have a hot shoe.
