SOMETHING TO DRINK ABOUT

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Front Page -

IN interviews over the years, Kiefer Sutherland has been polite, generous with his time and open to answering questions about all aspects of his life. He just doesn’t sound the type to raise hell when he goes out with friends for a drink — or two. Sutherland was famously photographed chilling in a bar with a buddy in 2003, grinning and surrounded by halfempty glasses, his pants around his ankles for no particular reason. And, of course, there was the Christmas tree. In a 2006 documentary that would earn immortality on YouTube, Sutherland is filmed chatting to a cameraman before turning and diving full barrel into a lit-up Christmas tree in a hotel lobby. There have also been bar fights, one of which was spurred when some guy licked the foot of Sutherland’s then-wife, model Kelly Winn. Does he think his challenging work life results in him breaking loose on occasion and making headlines? ‘‘The reality is I love to go out and have a drink with my friends,’’ he says. ‘‘It’s part ofmy life, and anyone who’s done a lot of that — it gets away from you sometimes. I would never like to allude to it as a by-product of the work I do. I never said I didn’t enjoy it (having a good drink); I never pretended I don’t.’’
