Eleven, Tuesday, 9pm ★★★★ The TV industry is littered with failed American remakes. Wilfred is one of the rare success stories. For those unfamiliar with Wilfred, he came into the world 12 years ago when actor Adam Zwar began reflecting on a visit to the house of a girl who had a domineering dog. Zwar and Jason Gann wrote and co-starred in their classic short film Wilfred, then spent years hoping a network would pick it up for series development. SBS did and the sitcom about a hapless guy (Zwar) trying to woo a girl (Cindy Waddington) with a bong-smoking dog (Gann) quickly achieved cult status. Gann was reluctant to be part of a US remake until realising he would have to endure seeing an American actor in the Wilfred suit if he turned down the opportunity. Thank heavens he relented because you can’t imagine the show without him. Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood plays Ryan and is terrific. Tonight sees Wilfred getting to know Ryan’s workmates, who cannot control their affection for the pooch. Needless to say, this ends badly for all concerned.
