BIRDSONG, ABC1, 8.30pm
STEPHEN (Eddie Redmayne, pictured) is in love with Isabelle (Clemence Poesy). It’s 1910 and they spend languid afternoons on the river, where there are no mosquitoes, but there is Isabelle’s husband, who’s a brute and sneers at poverty, but Isabelle wears pastel muslin, and Stephen whittles. And then sometimes it’s 1916 and Stephen’s in the trenches, where he’s regarded as a cold, queer one. The end? If only.
