THINK Aussie potato farmer and a name that springs to mind is ul­tra­ma­rathon leg­end Cliff Young.

Not that you would have seen Cliff on a show such as The Farmer Wants a Wife — he was renowned at the height of his fame for his solid ro­mance with the lady who would be­come his wife, Mary.

Farmer Matt is a dif­fer­ent mat­ter. The Vic­to­rian potato farmer is on the hunt for a part­ner, but it soon be­comes ap­par­ent spuds could come be­tween Matt and ro­mance.

In the first episode of the new sea­son of The Farmer Wants a Wife, Matt makes it clear to each lady he speed dates that her feel­ings about pota­toes could make or break their re­la­tion­ship.

Girls on a carb-free diet need not ap­ply.

‘‘ I like pota­toes, you can use pota­toes in just about any dish,’’ says Matt, a fourth­gen­er­a­tion farmer.

‘‘ Pota­toes are def­i­nitely the deal breaker. They’ve got to love pota­toes.’’

It has taken Matt a while to come to the con­clu­sion he’s ready for mar­riage.

‘‘ I got burnt pretty bad the last time I was with a girl. I de­cided I didn’t like girls for a while. I liked beer more.
