BIGASK

KUNAL Nayyar plays Raj, the king of the oneliner, in TV ratings hit, The Big Bang Theory.

Whowould you like to see Raj romance?

It would be really cool for him to date a geek icon on the show. But to be completely honest, I don’t really know because any woman would be fine. I don’t think Raj has the right to be choosy.

Howard and Bernadette were married. Howdoes that affect Raj?

He always used Howard Wolowitz as his crutch. When you take that crutch away, he’s going to have to lean on something else. Either he eats 20 cheeseburgers a day and becomes 400 pounds and is sad and crying all the time or he actually goes out there and risks his heart on some love.

Would you like to go into space like Howard?

Me, personally? No way. I have a fear of heights and I’m claustrophobic.

Raj is usually the king of one-liners in the show. Will that change?

I don’t think so. In general, this character always comes in and says one line. It feels like he saves up his thoughts and reveals them at the most inappropriate moment. Whatever his role in the show is going to be, I trust the writers and the producers inherently – it’s fun to go out and play.

Hownerve-racking does it feel to have these witty one-liners every episode?

When we first started The Big Bang Theory, I would get incredibly nervous because it’s such a big show and I was just out of graduate school. I’d come in and have this huge responsibility for the one line that everyone hopes will bring down the house.

Howdid it feel to have Stephen Hawking guest star last year?

That was amazing. We’ve had some great guest stars including Leonard Nimoy and Stan Lee, but Stephen Hawking was fantastic with his one-liner.

What other guest stars would you like to see on

The Big Bang Theory? I don’t know how to top Stephen Hawking. Where do you go from there? Maybe Barack Obama can come on this year? I know he’s not a geek, but he’d be great on the show.

What do you like the most about your character?

My character is really good looking. I love that! No, in all seriousness, I think Raj is a very funny guy. He likes to rattle things up with his one-liners, but he’s just speaking his mind. He’ll make an observation about something that is so pure and that’s what is funny.

Can you take us through your working week?

We get our script the week before we shoot the show. We rehearse on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and the weekend – but shoot on Monday and Tuesday.

Are you able to juggle any other acting projects alongside the show?

I like to work as much as I can, but I only really have the hiatus to work on other projects. I’ve kept myself busy recently. I voiced a character in Ice Age 4, which was a lot of fun. I also did another small movie called The Scribbler.

What are your geekiest qualities?

I love video games. I love, love, love them! I also love Star Wars. I wish Jedi was a true religion. The Big Bang Theory, Channel 9, weeknights, 7pm
