DIANNE BUTLER OUT OF THE BOX
I HOPE you haven’t read the Emile Zola book this is meant to be based on, and carry on when you find it’s not the same. This is still fabulous — gorgeous and fluffy-serious and about shopping, for crying out loud, there’s no way you’re not going to love it. Dewy young Denise wants to work at her depressed uncle Mr Lovett’s drapery but the scary department store across the street is taking all the business. So Denise goes over there and gets a job in ladies fashion. The place — The Paradise — is owned by John Moray, who is expansionist (‘‘I deal in appetite’’) and can see into the future.
