Downton returns with an old star

MARY Crawley and Matthew Crawley’s wedding. This is how you can tell these Downton Abbey people are real aristocrats— Mary and Matthew are cousins. I feel as if we’ve already been through this ordeal, but apparently not.

It’s just taken ages, and had a lot of obstacles, like on Neighbours when Daphne the stripper was marrying Des and got kidnapped on her way to the ceremony by a bank robber in a gorilla suit.

The entire Downton household — the entire village — is looking forward to it. And so is Mary (even though her father’s given her some exceedingly distressing news: there’s no footman). She and Matthew are also looking forward to having sex for the first time. That time Mary had sex with that other guy doesn’t count, because he died. Also he wasn’t white.

I just hope Carson can struggle on without a footman. You know yourself, it’s a nightmare.

Didn’t he have a heart attack or something last year when there was a similar footman emergency? I can see how.

The stress is tremendous. He breaks a glass on Sunday night, and this is only the first episode of what is clearly going to be a very trying season. Trying for me, I mean.

I don’t suppose it’s very likely, but do you think Bates actually murdered his wife?

I would say this is looking like the strongest season so far
