HOLLY BYRNES OUT OF THE BOX

TOP OF THE LAKE, UKTV, 8.30pm

Herald Sun - Switched On - - Sundaymarch -

LIKE the fog which descends on this sleepy, creepy town, Jane Campion’s TV series seeps in and envelops the audience. From the opening scene, where 12-year-old Tui (Jacqueline Joe) is seen walking purposefully into the freezing waters of an alpine lake, the drama unfolds slowly, but is utterly gripping. When it’s discovered Tui is pregnant, detective Robin Giffin ( Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss) is called in to investigate. When Tui disappears, the search takes Giffin, home to nurse her cancer-stricken mother (Robin Niven), on a journey to find the young girl and herself. Masterful storytelling.
