DIANNE BUTLER OUT OF THE BOX
OLIVER STONE: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE US, History Channel, 7.30pm
TONIGHT’S the second episode and it looks at Stalin’s relationship with Churchill and Roosevelt, especially towards the end of WWII, and considers Russia’s sacrifice to the war. This opens in January 1943, as Roosevelt and Churchill met in Casablanca, without Stalin, but shortly after Time magazine had named Stalin Man of the Year. There’s also a domestic focus here — the Democratic convention in 1944, the mass strikes and the freeze on wages as corporate profits, driven by the war, soared. Compelling.
