DIANNE BUTLER OUT OF THE BOX
THE POISON TREE, 13th Street, 8.30pm
DAD’S coming home today. From jail. Karen, his wife, and Alice, their teenaged daughter, are waiting at the gate with the Volvo. Rex, the husband, is evasive about his scars (he says they’re from hot oil/his wife thought he worked in the garden) but this isn’t the problem. They’re both so jittery about Alice finding out ‘‘ the truth’’ that it feels like one person too few went to jail. For whatever the crime was. Rex can’t get a job, so it’s something careerlimiting. They’re desperate to hide their big secret though. Let’s hope it actually is big, when we eventually find out.
