Inspired by the success of “The Sharks” on Channel 10’s new reality show Shark Tank? Steve Baxter shares the secrets to his own brilliance in business.

My business motto is … Do business you are proud of.

The best deal I made was … On Shark Tank. It is a great business with an awesome entrepreneur. I’d love to tell you more, but you’ll need to watch!

The best $100 I ever spent was on … Buying accounting software for my first business, learning how to use it. If you don’t know your numbers, then you’re in trouble.

The one mistake I’m glad I made in business was … To ignore the “experts” who told me my first business would fail. Sometimes you have to go with your gut.

The craziest pitch I ever made was for … The $11,000 I needed to start my first business from the bedroom of a rented house, while I was still a full-time soldier. I had to convince my wife to let me spend the home loan deposit we’d saved for.

My greatest success has been … My family. I have a wonderful wife and a gorgeous daughter. Business wise in terms of sheer monetary return, PIPE Networks, but for sheer pride it is Indoor Sky Dive Australia. To take two honest, hardworking blokes, back them, help them list on the Australian Stock Exchange and see them succeed is beyond compare.

The one piece of business advice I’d give is … Never spend a dollar to save 50 cents.

The worst business decision I ever made was … Exiting my first business too early when I sold to Malcolm Turnbull’s Oz-Email. I could have held out for longer and a better valuation. Luckily it didn’t work out too bad for me in the end.
