He didn’t care for magic as a kid, but when he took the role of Houdini’s assistant in Houdini, Evan Jones quickly fell under the magician’s — and Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody’s — spell.

Jones plays Jim Collins, Houdini’s assistant opposite Brody’s Harry Houdini in the miniseries, which exposes the life of the man behind the magic as through sleight of hand and illusion Houdini turned the world of magic on its head.

Collins is almost as much of an enigma — a man who, despite having a wife and family — willingly joined Houdini’s travelling circus.

“Jim was his keeper of the secrets and Houdini trusted him with his life,” says the 40year-old Texan. “That’s how I wanted to play it. That’s what made sense to me. There was this almost God-like relationship.”

Jones has worked in films including 8 Mile, Gangster Squad, The Book of Eli, Jarhead and Glory Road and alongside stars such as Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank. He leapt at the chance to play a good guy for a change, and alongside Brody.

“I play the bad guy most of the time, so to play Jim and be a sweetheart, and get to go back to be the bad guy afterwards was great,” he says.
