New arrivals power on among returning Heroes

The first Heroes star Jack Coleman knew about the cult series getting a reboot was when he saw an advertisement on television.

Coleman played Noah Bennett, aka the man in hornrimmed glasses, through four seasons of the sci-fi drama, but he had no idea creator Tim Kring was planning to resurrect the show.

“I was watching the Winter Olympics and saw the ad for Heroes Reborn, and the other actors and I began texting each other if we knew about this,” Coleman recalls.

As it happens, Coleman is one of the few original Heroes actors to return for Heroes Reborn. Kring had to jettison Hayden Panettiere (Claire), Zachary Quinto (Sylar), and Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli) due to unavailability.

New signings include Zach Levi ( Chuck), Robbie Kay (Peter Pan in Once Upon a Time), Ryan Guzman ( The Boy Next Door), and Japanese star Kiki Sukezane.

Kring has devised a 13-part stand-alone storyline which takes place five years after the events in Heroes.

The new series starts with a murderous explosion at the Unity Summit in Odessa, Texas, an event designed to make peace between evos (evolved humans) and the general population.

“I always saw it ( Heroes) as a show that could repopulate itself,” Kring says. “(Thirteen episodes allows) us to do aggressive storytelling.”

Levi plays Luke Collins, a father who turns vigilante with wife Joanne (Judith Shekoni) after the Odessa explosion. He blames the evos and wants them all destroyed.

“Luke is very tortured, very conflicted, very angry,” Levi says. “My approach to every role is to try and make (my character) as human as possible.

“You have to go to these (dark) places as a person, and that is hard.”

Kring is clearly courting a younger audience with Kay’s teen Tommy Clark, right. Because he is an evo, Clark, who has teleporter powers, is forced to hide out at a high school.

Things get complicated when Tommy falls for classmate Emily (Gatlin Green) and is targeted by Collins.

“In Once Upon a Time my character is 250 years old and very sure in what he was capable of and this is completely the opposite,” Kay says.

Coleman is the only actor from Heroes who will feature in every episode of Heroes Reborn. Kring has revealed that some former characters will pop up.
