COACHING WILL HAVE TO WAIT
Will Cameron Ling ever take up coaching? That is the question haunting AFL circles ever since the former Geelong champion hung up his boots at the end of the 2011 season.
Ling has spent the past five years a specialist commentator for Channel 7 and radio’s 3AW, and host of Seven travel show Melbourne Weekender.
Ling played 246 games for Geelong, is a three-time premiership player (2007, 2009, 2011) and former captain.
He admits commentating, which inevitably means sometimes having to criticise his former club and teammates, didn’t come easy.
“For the first year I felt really self-conscious about it,” Ling says. “I had to be honest and give my opinion but only a few months earlier I had been playing and training with these people and some of them were my closest friends.”
Is he interested in coaching or will he stick with the media?
“Right now … I still love what I am doing. The roles I have I find really challenging. I’m keen to continue along that journey.
“Every now and then, when I spend time with former teammates who are coaching or still playing, and I get into talking about tactics … I start to get a pull in that direction (coaching). (I think) I wouldn’t mind having a crack at that.”
