Sianoa returns as a rural rebel teen

The last time Sianoa SmitMcPhee was on Australian screens she was playing rebellious teenager Bree Timmons on Neighbours.

Now, for the first time since she left our shores for America in 2007, she’s back playing another rebellious teenager. Although this time, the mood is far darker and things may not end so happily for everyone in the neighbourhood.

Smit-McPhee plays Chloe in The Kettering Incident —a complex, almost gothic drama which is part murder mystery, part sci-fi, part stylised film noir.

Her character is a small town Tasmanian girl desperate to escape to the big time allure of the mainland. And it’s a desire that Smit-McPhee can entirely relate to.

“Absolutely I can,” the 24year old actor says from her base in LA.

“I’ve been performing since basically I was born — my first head shot was when I was one. It’s all I’ve ever done. And obviously a big platform for that is America so ever since I was a little kid I wanted that. It’s worked out but obviously I have that connection with Chloe.”

With her younger brother Kodi ( X Men: The Apocolypse) also an actor based in LA and her husband John Rush an American music producer, Smit-McPhee has plenty to keep her Stateside.

But having loved her time back in her homeland filming The Kettering Incident, SmitMcPhee is keen to bring another creative project Down Under.

In addition to acting, SmitMcPhee is also a musician and is putting the finishing touches on her debut EP.

“I’m hopefully coming to Australia in July to start off doing some little acoustic shows and then work up from there,” she says.

“My husband is the executive producer, so it’s a joint project basically, but it’ll just be released as Sianoa. We’re totally hustling right now, we’re doing everything ourselves.

“Our website is completely built and run by my husband and I. All the music videos and photography is done by us. It’s a really hands on project.

“If I didn't’ have the past 20 years acting then I really wouldn’t know what to do. But I know how to put together a schedule, do lighting, do blocking and everything really so it was quick and fun to put together.”

“I’ve been performing since I was born. It’s all I’ve ever done”
