He’s been a mainstay of Criminal Minds for 11 seasons, and is a firm favourite with fans. But this Wednesday marks the beginning of a special threeepisode arc that culminates in Special Agent Derek Morgan, (played by Shemar Moore, below) saying a fond farewell to the series for good.

The actor announced his departure earlier this year, saying he was keen to try his hand at other things.

“I’m leaving because I want to continue to grow as an actor,” he said recently.

“I love what I do for a living, but I also want to walk my dogs, travel, get married, have kids. I want balance, and it’s hard to do with the schedule that we have.”

His departure was not just a shock to fans — it was also a blow for his fellow cast and crew, with the show’s executive producer Erica Messer sharing a sweet message from the team after his final episode aired.

“We have nothing but love and respect for him and his choice,” she said, “but it doesn’t mean we can’t also be really, really sad.”

Messer says they thought of this final three episode arc as a kind of tribute to Moore, with some of his co-stars, including Matthew Gray Gubler (Dr Spencer Reid) jumping in to write and direct. /
