Hot Seat hits a milestone this week — so far in 2016 the quiz show has given away $3 million in prizes and a contestant will walk home with cash every night this week.

The Eddie McGuire-hosted series has been running second to newcomer The Chase Australia in the ratings this year, but certainly has the runs on the board when it comes to giving away cash.

In fact, Hot Seat gives away on average more than double the amount of money The Chase Australia does.

Since the latest version of the series premiered in 2009, it has handed out a whopping $36 million in cash.

The show’s genesis stretches all the way back to 1999, when McGuire hosted the primetime hit Who Wants to Be A Millionaire.

They bumped the total prize on offer up to $5 million in 2007, but when the latest 30 minute incarnation Millionaire Hot Seat debuted in 2009 in the crucial lead in to the six o’clock news timeslot, it reverted to $1 million.

More recently, Nine started referring to the show simply as Hot Seat which is only fitting, given that in the 1470 episodes of the show, no one has yet won the $1 million prize.

Only six contestants ever got that far, and none succeeded.
