STYLE DUO STICKING IT TO THE HATERS
A decade or so ago, British style mavens Trinny and Susannah set about transforming the bland High Street style of millions of British women — and became household names in the process.
Now, Australia has its own fabulously fashionable duo doing the same thing. Where their British counterparts were known for eyebrow-raising, love-handle-grabbing and bitchy asides, Tash Sefton and Elle Ferguson — the duo behind uber-popular fashion blog and online store @theyallhateus, and now the stars of Foxtel’s makeover show Style Squad — don’t appear to have a nasty bone in their bodies.
“What we like about the show is it’s not nasty at all,” says Ferguson. “We’re not tearing shreds off people about what they wear. In our world we meet so many amazing people — there’s just no room for nasty. We are always very positive in the They All Hate Us world.”
The irony of this last statement isn’t lost on either of them. They first began writing their blog as a way of secretly communicating in the office — Tash was the head of women’s wear at a major Australian retailer, and Elle was in charge of visual merchandising — and their boss hated them both.
They were constantly in trouble for chatting, so took it online. Fast forward and their little blog is now global, their online store generating millions (40 per cent of sales are through the States) and setting trends.
“The producers and the network came to us for another show, but then they said, ‘We love you girls, but we think you are big enough characters in yourself that you need your own show’,” Sefton explains.
In the first episode we meet lovely fiftysomething foster mum Jacintha. She admits to being stuck in a style rut.
It’s lovely to watch the transformation and the girls say it’s the highlight of working with each of the eight ‘stylees’ featured in the series.
