Michael Weatherly took a massive risk leaving NCIS but it has paid off with the lead role in Bull.

Bull is based on the early life of talk show host Dr Phil McGraw. Jason Bull, played by Weatherly, is a psychologist who heads a jury consulting firm. Bull has the skills to select the right jurors to get his clients acquitted.

Weatherly spent 13 seasons playing Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo on NCIS before calling it quits in late 2015.

“Everything that has been wonderful (in life) has been a risk,” Weatherly says. “It was my choice to leave NCIS. If you (DiNozzo) are constantly number two, being groomed to be number one, but you never (get there) — that is sort of sad.

“Life is an impermanent thing and so change, while we don’t like it, has to happen, and I never feared it.”

Bull has proved Weatherly’s star power. The series premiere grabbed nearly 16 million viewers in the US.

“Bull is a fascinating conceit, because you have this master of behavioural analysis (who) knows what you will be thinking as you see him. Being smug may just be what Bull presents (to see) how (potential jurors) will react — to get them to reveal themselves,” Weatherly says.
