And you thought Married At First Sight’s Anthony Manton was a villain?

Meet The Last Resort’s personal trainer Carl Richards.

The gold chain-wearing, father-of-two — who cheated on his wife Lucy with one of his home gym clients — has used one of the oldest lines in the book to justify his infidelity —telling News Corp he thought the couple were on a break.

“In my head we were separated even though we were living under the same roof,” Richards, 37, said of his affair three years ago.

In promo ads for the new season, Nine have played up his blasé attitude to playing up on his wife, replaying one scene where he tells other couples in the TV experiment “I’ve never really felt guilty about it.”

Richards still argues he had effectively left his marriage when he cheated on the mother of his two children, claiming “I told Lucy I didn’t want to be with her anymore on so many occasions... we hadn’t had sex in a year.” Throwing fuel on the fire, he says: “[Lucy] was going through a really difficult time at the time with herself mentally, you know ... having a baby. So I had a client who I’d been training for quite a long time and she’s quite a good friend... we discussed different aspects of my life and she was there for me.”

Richards fessed up to Lucy two years later and only after she confronted him, adding: “I never wanted to lie to her.”
