Australia is starting to feel like a pit stop in Ronny Chieng’s meteoric rise to global fame, but while here, he’s nailed our comedy culture.

Recently cast in the film version of Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, Chieng, 31, is also a regular cast member of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah in the US.

Fortunately, after a successful pilot, a series of Ronny Chieng: International Student had already been commissioned by the ABC before he joined Noah’s team.

“It was written into my contract, they were very nice about it,” Chieng says.

Born to Chinese parents in Malaysia, he lived in the UK, US and Singapore before he came to Australia to study law.

“When the ABC asked me to submit a pilot idea for a TV show, I knew … that you have to tell a story that no one else can tell,” he says.

In the US, Chieng also does stand-up, trying out new material in clubs.

“I tour the US on weekends,” he says. “I also do some shows at night after The Daily Show. I’m very lucky to be at the Comedy Cellar (New York) a lot, probably the best comedy venue in America. ”
