WANTED IS NO DRAG FOR GERI

Herald Sun - Switched On - - ON THE BOX -

Just as her character Chelsea Babbage is coming out of her shell this season, Wanted star Geraldine Hakewill also got to shake things up while filming.

The Channel 7 drama took the show on the road to film its opening scenes on the colourful streets of Bangkok, where David, the on-screen son of Hakewill’s co-star Rebecca Gibney, was being held hostage.

While filming was “fast and furious”, Hakewill says there was time to enjoy the nightlife.

“Charles Cottier [who plays David] and I ended up in a drag show one night,” she says.

“Downstairs at our hotel, there was this amazing bar, so we waltzed in. There were guys there from [US reality series] RuPaul’s Drag Race and we did karaoke and all sorts of things … but we had been working pretty hard. It was fast and furious, shooting in the middle of the city, so that was mental.”

Her character has come a long way since season one, when the accountant — on the run with Gibney’s Lola Buckley — “was very frightened of the world around her and very insecure about her place in it”.

“It was really exciting for me reading the [latest] scripts and seeing how much she changes and how brave Chelsea really is.”
