SONY XPERIA XA1 ULTRA

This phone is a reminder that Sony can nail the phablet format. The six-inch full HD screen on this mid-range impresses, as does its 19-megapixel front camera. Pity it’s missing a fingerprint scanner. $45/month / vodafone.com.au

BLACKBERRY KEYONE

The BlackBerry keyboard is back in this phone, beneath a 4.5-inch screen showing Android apps. The comeback phone also offers BBM messaging, a productivity tab for notifications, but no water resistance. $899 / jbhifi.com.au

MOTO G5 PLUS

One of the best budget phones, the G5 Plus delivers a decent 5.2-inch screen, a metal and water-resistant body, and a 12-megapixel camera that belies its price. It’s limited to 16GB storage but will accept a memory card. $399 / harveynorman.com.au

HTC U11

There’s more to this phone than squeezing its sides, which opens its camera. The U11 is a zippy, full-featured return to form, with water resistance, a sharp camera and enviable screen. It lacks a headphone jack, and attracts fingerprints, though. $999 / harveynorman.com.au

HUAWEI P10 PLUS

The Leica cameras in this smartphone will be hard for others to beat. The 5.5-inch phone features two cameras — one colour, one monochrome — which let it mimic the depth of field of a big camera, and deliver 2x optical zoom. It also features optical image stabilisation, a smart portrait mode, and an 8-megapixel front camera. It’s also fast, with an octa-core chip and 6GB RAM, has 128GB storage built-in, though it’s not water-resistant. $1099 / harveynorman.com.au
