BACK FOR ANOTHER HELPING

Why does Heston Blumenthal keep coming back for MasterChef Australia? The famed British celebrity chef has appeared in the past eight seasons of the Channel 10 cooking show.

It can’t just be because Blumenthal wants to play another take-no-prisoners table tennis tournament against judge George Calombaris, though that is one drawcard.

Receiving the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Life Achievement Award in Melbourne in March was another highlight.

Instead, Blumenthal says he relishes being at the coalface when the contestants have to dig deep to push through the show’s tough challenges.

“Yes, it is brutal but they really care for the wellbeing of those contestants,” Blumenthal says. “The ones that get out (eliminated) even after the first round, have still had a life lesson that money can’t buy.”

This year, Blumenthal is on a road trip with Calombaris, Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan, taking in Swan Hill, Mildura, the Maribyrnong River and Mornington Peninsula.

Each challenge, starting Sunday, for the competitors revolves around one of the four elements: earth, air, fire and water.
