A relative veteran of game shows, Michala Banas has a crack at experimental new game show Behave Yourself, hosted by Darren McMullen. It was a no-brainer for the actor who is in between big gigs … for now.
How did you go on Behave Yourself? I haven’t seen it, because I’m not in the country. I’m dying to see how it all came together in the end. When you film those things you sort of have no idea. You just have a good time and do the best you can. I had a blast, I did three episodes, quite a mixed bag of people to play and work with. I’ve worked with Darren a couple of times before, and I love Lawrence Mooney, I think he’s hilarious.
The first episode copped some negativity on Twitter, do you think that was fair? I think we can be a little hasty sometimes, a little triggerhappy when it comes to passing judgement on things. I’ve got a rule, myself, where I always give something three episodes, any new show before I make a decision on how I feel about it. After that, you’re in or you’re out. I don’t know that it makes a huge impact, but I’m not an exec, so I don’t know.
Twitter isn’t known for being a positive place … I also think that with shows like this, there’s different people each week, so maybe they didn’t like those people together, or not everyone likes me, so they might watch an episode that I’m in and say, ‘ugh, I don’t like her’, or some people do like me, you know what I mean? Maybe they just didn’t like the mix of people on that episode but you can’t obliterate a show after one night. Have You Been Paying Attention? is a big hit now, but took quite a while to catch on. Shows like this have to build their audience. We have no idea what the show is, we have to work out how to do it.
Which do you prefer, playing a character or being yourself? Ultimately, I’d rather pretend to be someone else. But if that’s not happening, I’m prepared to be myself.
Will we see Amber from Upper Middle Bogan again? Not at this stage, it’s quite tricky to get the cast available at the same time. Patrick Brammall, Glenn Robbins, Robyn Nevin, some very talented people who work a lot. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there will be more Amber because she is one of the favourite roles I’ve played. Spin-off Christmas special? Let’s write some letters.
There’s talk of a McLeod’s Daughters reunion … There’s been a little bit of McLeod’s catching up lately. You forge these friendships and some last a long time. Do you like how ambiguous I’m being?
