Kat Stewart

Asher Keddie’s Nina Proudman has been the one going through all the emotional turmoil in past seasons of Offspring.

But this year Nina’s sister, Billie, played by Kat Stewart, has had to endure a heartbreaking split with husband Mick (Eddie Perfect).

Billie’s rollercoaster life has showcased Stewart’s comedic and dramatic talents like never before. No wonder many critics believe she is the best actor on Australian television.

Stewart and husband David Whiteley have two children, Archie, 5, and 18-month-old daughter Georgia.

Billie Proudman has been through the wringer this year. She has had to start from scratch again. I really admire the fact she was so proactive and called it (quits) when it came to Mick even though it was heartbreaking.

How hard was it for Billie to bring that relationship with Mick to an end? I still believe that if Billie and Mick were in the same city, they would still be together. They are soulmates even though there have always been plenty of obstacles. I think he will always be the great love of her life. I’d never heard the term “sex wall” until Billie started dating post-Mick. It was a new concept to me, too. Evidently I’ve been out of circulation for a long time. I get to live vicariously through my characters without having to actually go there in real life.

Billie didn’t put too many bricks in the wall before she met Dan (Jeremy Lindsay Taylor). What’s the attraction? Billie had made a point of frightening off her dates so they don’t fall in love with her but when she did that with Dan he raised the stakes so it became a kind of twisted game. She is completely intrigued by this potentially unhinged man. I can’t tell you how much fun that has been to play.

I thought you were underutilised on Offspring last season. Has this season been more satisfying? Last season was a little bit of a blur just because Gigi (Georgia) was so little and I was running between the van and set breastfeeding. I felt busy enough. This season I’ve been able to concentrate on work which has been lovely and they have given me such great stuff

to play with.

What are the chances of an eighth season of Offspring? I’m very fatalistic about these things. I always assume each season is our last and anything else is a pleasant surprise. In tonight’s season finale they (the Proudmans) are left in a good place. I don’t think this is a job I could ever say no to because I love it so much. But I’m assuming that’s (tonight’s finale) it (the end).
