Bucks back for desal fail

Herald Sun - - NEWS -

HOUSEHOLDS are set to get some water bill relief after operators of the trouble-plagued desalination plant failed to produce 50 billion litres ordered by the government.

The embarrassing shortfall, which Water Minister Lisa Neville said would be about four billion litres, should trigger a compensation clause in operator Aquasure’s contract.

Aquasure had been unable to produce 50 billion litres inside today’s deadline because a power failure put the Wonthaggi plant out of action.

Ms Neville said as a result the government would seek to cut payments it makes to the operators of the desal plant.
