WET weather and enhanced security did nothing to dampen the spirits of beer enthusiasts as the 184th Oktoberfest opened in Munich at the weekend.

Six million people from all over the world are expected to visit the world’s largest beer festival, which runs until October 4.

This year, visitors can download an app that shows nearby tents with available space. It will also help festival-goers find lost friends — which will be useful as the largest tent fits 10,000 people.

Oktoberfest organisers hope more people will attend this year after numbers dipped in 2016, in part due to fears over terror attacks.

Security has since been bolstered at the festival, with backpacks and large bags now banned. Entrances will be watched by more than 650 security guards — 200 more than last year.
