NBN footprint reaches another 708,000
THE company behind the National Broadband Network says the rollout is on track for completion by 2020 after it added 708,000 homes and businesses to its footprint the past quarter.
As of September 30, there were 6.4 million premises covered by the network, NBN Co says, up from 3.2 million at the same time last year.
Another 520,000 premises signed up for the NBN over the three months to September, taking the total number connected to 2.9 million.
Network revenue more than doubled to $405 million in the September quarter, compared with $181 million in that period last year.
Operating expenses grew from $430 million to $502 million, due to increased labour and direct network costs.
Chief executive Bill Morrow said the taxpayer-owned company was making adjustments to ensure improvements at all service levels.
This follows an annual Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman report in October that found NBN complaints were rising at a faster rate than the number of users.
NBN Co hopes its network will extend to 11.6 million premises by 2020.
