This biopic of trailblazing African-American singer Nina Simone drew a lot of heat upon its release in cinemas last year. Primarily because it was felt lead actress Zoe Saldana ( Guardians Of the Galaxy) bore little or no resemblance to the iconic figure she was playing. Saldana actually does quite a good job in the lead role, emphatically channelling Simone’s fiery personality and unwavering conviction to do things her way. What does slightly disappoint is the film’s focus on the subject’s twilight years, while Simone’s musical prime (a period in which she also became an outspoken civil rights activist) keeps getting just bitsy flashbacks.
