ONLINE DINING MADE TO ORDER

From pizza to wings, we want it delivered

Herald Sun - - NEWS - GENEVIEVE ALISON genevieve.alison@news.com.au

THE biggest pizza lovers in Australia hail from St Kilda while Ferntree Gully was home to the country’s best burger last year.

Yarraville had the highest number of gluten-free diners and the best chicken wings were found in Ascot Vale.

The Herald Sun can reveal our state’s food plate according to a new report into online food delivery released today.

Victorians are leading the charge of lazy eaters, with more than half admitting they order in when they can’t be bothered to cook and 80 per cent saying they have ditched plans of going out for dinner to stay in with home delivered food instead.

The report by Menulog, the first of its kind in Australia, found Victorians were most likely to order food to “chill in bed” and almost a third like the idea of “eating out at home”.

Despite the state’s preference to bunker down at home, Menulog’s Australia-New Zealand managing director Alistair Venn said food delivery was an increasingly “social experience”.

“More often than not Menulog orders are those that will feed the family or be shared with friends,” Mr Venn said.

“In fact, more than half of all Victorians say they order food online to enjoy time with family and friends.”

Victorians were also found to order food online while watching a big sporting match at home.

The CBD, Southbank, East Melbourne, Carlton and Brunswick were the most delivered-to suburbs with the surf coast and Geelong among the fastest growing areas.

“As Victorians lead busier and busier lives, they continue to look for new ways to save a bit of time in the day,” Mr Venn said, adding that convenience was the key driver of the trend.

Online food delivery in Australia is booming with more than 68 million orders made — almost 7000 per hour. The online delivery market is growing at eight times that of the total food service industry.
