HOWZAT! WARNE JOINS FOX TEAM
SHANE Warne will have the formidable voice of Kerry Packer ringing in his ears when he embarks on the next chapter of his commentary career with Foxtel.
The spin king has signed on to help lead a new era of cricket broadcasting with a Fox Cricket team which includes some of the biggest names in the game.
Warne will suit up with former teammates Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, Mike Hussey and his first captain, Allan Border, after Foxtel secured the rights to broadcast cricket for six years.
He said the decision to leave previous rights holder Channel 9 was a tough one, but he would begin his latest adventure armed with the advice of Packer, cricket’s first TV revolutionary.
“As a commentator, Kerry Packer taught me very early, and sometimes I didn’t always do it, but he said ‘people can see what’s happening, so don’t tell me what’s happening, tell me why it’s happening’,” Warne told the Herald Sun.
“He said: ‘You played the game, take me out in to the middle, tell me what it’s like facing fast bowlers at 160kmh, what it’s like when you don’t know which way the ball is spinning, how do you play reverse swing. Tell me what’s it like walking out on the ground at Lords or the MCG. The viewer will never have that opportunity, so help them enjoy that experience’ — and I want to enhance that.”
Warne threw his support behind Australian cricket after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. He endorsed new coach Justin Langer, as well as the review of team culture, and said he hoped as a combination, they could help make cricket fans “proud of the Australian cricket team again”.
Former stars Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist have joined the Fox Cricket team.
