Dual carriageway call for freight route

Hills Gazette (Kalamunda) - - NEWS -

THE City of Kalamunda is calling on the State and Federal governments to provide financial support for a much-needed upgrade to Abernethy Road in High Wycombe from a single lane to a dual carriageway, with an extension to the railway tunnel.

Mayor Andrew Waddell said there was an urgent need to upgrade the road to dual carriage between Avonside Crescent and Adelaide Street.

“This stretch of road is a key freight route and experiences congestion during peak periods due to the volume of vehicles servicing the surrounding industrial areas,” he said.

“The projected population increases and heavy vehicle usage present serious economic, community and safety issues to our community, with the current daily vehicle usage of 15,000 projected to rise to 28,000 vehicles per day by 2031.”

He said the capacity for road widening was restricted by the single carriageway over the Forrestfield Rail Tunnel.

Mr Waddell called for a 3km stretch of the road to be upgraded, a major extension to the railway tunnel and intersection upgrades at Abernethy Road/ Kalamunda Road, Abernethy Road/Dundas Road and Abernethy Road/Adelaide Street.
