Kitted out with kindness
MIDLAND-based People Who Care charity and the City of Swan partnered with businesses to provide emergency escape kits for victims of domestic violence.
More than 600 kits will be distributed to shelters throughout Perth to assist people in emergency crisis.
Volunteer Linda Ross said corporate partners such as Bankwest and the Hyatt Hotel helped the charity continue providing essential services in a tough economic climate.
“Bankwest have been giving back to the community for so long that when we approached them about helping to pack bags we were putting together for the Patricia Giles Centre, it was like asking a member of the family to help at People Who Care,” she said.
Bankwest manager of volunteer programs Wendy Gauci said staff jumped at the chance to be involved.
People Who Care chief executive Alison White said the project came about because of an increasing number of older women and families coming to the charity’s offices seeking help.
“I met with a number of these people and others who had personal experience of domestic violence and asked them how we might best help address this community need,” she said.
Bankwest volunteers Daniella Hassett and Monique Nicolls help pack the kits with Alison White and Tillie Prowse.
