From Cr Kate Driver
I am honoured to be a newly elected councillor in the Shire of Mundaring. The trust placed in me to bring your views to Council and to implement positive change is humbling.
The Perth eastern hills are a wonderful place to live. We have an excellent arts centre, a great variety of sports clubs, heritage trails, quality arts and crafts makers, small farms and local producers, village shops, unique flora and fauna, all in a beautiful natural environment that is protected by dedicated volunteer firefighting teams.
I am excited about the entrepreneurial potential of our district, especially when new initiatives are driven by compassion. There are already many inspiring blueprints for this type of growth. Community gardens generate attractive spaces and bring people together. Community-owned renewable energy projects create social, political, environmental, economic and technological benefits. Inventive uses for recycled materials, such as building houses with tyres, also offer great advantages.
Increasing tourism with a strategy that aims to showcase local businesses, craftspeople and produce, while improving the environment and retaining the various towns’ distinctive charms, is possible.
People who dream big, collaborate, get in there and give it a go, are running local business and volunteer organisations. These people create our community, our place. I am keen to learn how the Shire can help initiate and maintain these activities.
Listening to the diversity of voices in the district, sharing information and fairly representing you is my primary goal. Getting out to community events and groups is one way I will be doing this; I welcome all invitations and am eager to engage. I have also started speaking with the local ratepayers groups and progress associations, and will be attending meetings as much as possible. I encourage you to get involved in your local group and have your say!
