Scholarship gets duo on train to Glory
TWO girls soccer players from the eastern suburbs will get the chance to train with the Perth Glory W-League team this season after they were rewarded with a new scholarship.
Bayswater resident Morgan Aquino and Lexie Moreno, of Dianella, joined three other National Training Centre (NTC) players who received the first Football West Female Young Talented Player Scholarships.
The girls will train alongside Glory’s elite player group, headed by captain and Matildas star Sam Kerr.
The scholarship will provide financial assistance for the players to cover costs and travel expenses during the summer.
Football West chief executive James Curtis said the scholarships provided important recognition to talented players with the potential to play in the WLeague.
“The Football West Female Young Player Scholarships recognise each player’s commitment to improving and dedication to the sport in the hope that they will continue to play the game and, perhaps, one day pull on a Perth Glory shirt or even play for the Matildas in future,” he said.
Glory coach Bobby Despotovski said the program would help the girls improve as players and show them standards they needed to meet to take their game to the next level, as well as meeting the club’s objectives.
“The program provides the girls with a great opportunity to further their careers and it provides us with the opportunity to maintain our club’s commitment to nurturing local WA talent,” he said.
