LOCAL landscapes by Hills artist Joanna Meredith will be unveiled at a premiere exhibition in the Darlington home of the late Robert Juniper and his wife Patricia (Trish).

“Bob and I talked about what my future could hold in store for me after he’d gone and it always was our plan that I could run some artist retreat or exhibitions from here,” Mrs Juniper said.

“So, at last, after all the behindthe-scenes planning, things came together for this premiere exhibition.

“I met Jo Meredith when she won the Bob and Trish Juniper Prize for visual artist at the Mundaring Bicentennial Scholarship for her portrait of her father.

“I suggested she do a portrait of me to hang beside the portrait I have of Bobby. And so she did, and we became friends.”

Meredith’s landscape collection, titled West, depicts scenes of Darlington, Fremantle and some en plein air from Kalbarri.

“For the past 18 months, I’ve been developing my oil landscape technique whilst exploring our stunning and varied environment; the resulting works are West,” Meredith said.

She said her art practice expressed what brings joy in her life.

“West explores the immersion in our environment that both nourishes and excites us,” she said.

“There’s no better feeling than treading the curves of our coast, bush or gorges and not knowing what lies ahead. Dissolving into the landscape’s ever-shifting light, sounds, sensations; breathing in the rich colours and smells.”

She said her hope was for viewers to feel saturated by the landscapes in the same way she first experienced them.

“Or be reminded of those moments they too have been ensnared by the west,” she said.

“I’m very honoured to have my work going up in Bob’s studio knowing its rich history, and the incredible works that have been created within its walls. It’s the perfect place to hold communion with nature through art.”

Meredith studied art at UWA and travelled extensively in Europe and the US.

Art Gallery of WA foundation chair Marlene Stafford will open West on Sunday, with the collection on display until December 3.
