Call to help woman es­ca­lates, with po­lice­men in­jured

A PO­LICE of­fi­cer lost con­scious­ness af­ter he and his col­league were set upon by a group of men when they re­sponded to an in­ci­dent in El­len­brook on Fri­day night.

About 10.30pm po­lice were called to Pine­grove Drive by a mem­ber of the pub­lic who was con­cerned about a woman they could see stag­ger­ing down the road.

Two po­lice of­fi­cers found the woman, and con­tacted St John Am­bu­lance.

A man ap­proached the of­fi­cers and at­tempted to in­ter­fere with the sit­u­a­tion.

An­other two men, who had come from a Pine­grove Drive home, ap­proached the of­fi­cers and also tried to in­ter­fere.

All three men be­came ag­gres­sive and it will be al­leged one of the men punched one of the po­lice of­fi­cers, while a se­cond mem­ber of the group kicked the other po­lice of­fi­cer.

It will be al­leged the sit­u­a­tion es­ca­lated when one of the men pushed the po­lice of­fi­cer who had been punched, caus­ing him to fall back­wards and strike his head on the road. The of­fi­cer lost con­scious­ness. Ur­gent back-up was re­quested and sev­eral po­lice ve­hi­cles at­tended the lo­ca­tion, with three men ar­rested.

The two po­lice of­fi­cers were taken to St John of God Mid­land Pub­lic Hos­pi­tal but were later re­leased. The woman was taken to Joon­dalup hos­pi­tal by po­lice.

Se­cu­rity staff at the hos­pi­tal helped po­lice man­age her un­til she was as­sessed by med­i­cal staff.

The woman then re­fused treat­ment and was abu­sive to­wards the of­fi­cers as she left hos­pi­tal.

A 20-year-old man from El­len­brook and a 22-year-old man from Ave­ley have been charged with as­sault­ing a pub­lic of­fi­cer, as­sault­ing a pub­lic of­fi­cer while in com­pany and ob­struct­ing pub­lic of­fi­cers.

A 22-year-old man from Heathridge was also charged over the in­ci­dent.
