Renting is new norm

Hills Gazette - - NEWS -

THERE are now more renters than property owners in the cities of Swan and Kalamunda, according to the latest 2016 Census results.

Housing affordability expert Robert Snell said the results showed that across Australia, the number of people renting accommodation had continued to increase.

“Renters now outnumber owners without a mortgage and are just behind owners, with a mortgage in over 150 local government areas including the shires of York, Toodyay, Chittering and Northam,” he said.

“The trend shows that renting is the new norm and that the situation is only getting worse.”

Mr Snell called on state and federal governments to address the housing affordability crisis.

“Trapped in the cycle of being unable to save due to high rents, renters are further disadvantaged as land owners increase their wealth off property investments,” he said.
