LET COUNCILS HAVE SAY

Hills Gazette - - NEWS - COLIN HUGHES, Greenmount

THE PM, Christian Porter and (Andrew) Bolt wish to bully their way into stifling debate on finding a new Australia Day which celebrates our diversity and the traditional owners.

Of course councils should have the right to take the lead. After all, they are closer to the electorate than those in Canberra who abrogate their decisions on social issues such as marriage equality.

If we follow their logic of Australia Day can’t be changed (despite it being a public holiday only since 1994) because those in power say so, we would still have slavery and women would not have the vote. Peaceful protest is a fundamental right in an Australian democracy and must be defended at all costs.
