MICHAEL BELLSTEDT

Hills to Hawkesbury Living Magazine - - Know Your Candidates - Mitchell -

I am Michael Bellstedt, your Greens candidate for the federal seat of Mitchell in the 2016 election.

I am an engineer, and I run a local consulting engineering practice focussed on improving environmental and financial outcomes for our clients, by increasing energy efficiency, using renewable energy and reducing wastage.

Climate change is already affecting Mitchell, with increased bushfire risk, and the Greens have a comprehensive suite of policies to address this threat to our planet. While the government continues to promote dangerous fossil fuels, the Greens are calling to Renew Australia with 90% renewable energy by 2030, boosting our manufacturing industry, and helping us transition from coal. The Greens are also calling for a ban on dirty political donations from fossil fuel companies.

The Greens also oppose the current inhumane and costly policies aimed at cruelling refugees into staying away from Australia, through boat turn-backs and offshore processing. The Greens want immediate closure offshore detention centres, and a move towards community processing. Seeking asylum is not a crime, and Australia should be embracing its international obligations, and welcoming refugees.

Education is a basic right and should be accessible to everyone, not only to those with the means to afford it. An educated population is essential for national prosperity and growth; hence we oppose the government policy of privatisation and deregulation of education in favour of a system of free public education for all.

Vote [1] the Greens in 2016 for a fairer, more compassionate and sustainable future for Australia.
